'Here at last is the book that was needed, and it comes at the right moment, just when the primitive native territories are beginning to feel the influence of Western civilisation - just as, in the author's phrase, Zululand is beginning to wear trousers instead of the red blanket. These storied territories will soon have lost their real colour and romance. Carel Birkby has captured and preserved that colour as the "twilight" is falling.' - Lawrence G.
