Joseph Arthur (1848-1906; born Arthur Hill Smith) was an American playwright. He began his career as a news reporter in China, India, and Japan. In this letter to Jack H. (J. H.) Haverly (1837-1901), a manager of theatrical minstrel troupes, Arthur writes on behalf of Mr. Nazir, who runs The Gaiety theater in Bombay.
