First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 271pp. Finely rebound in blue leather with five raised bands and gilt lettering, rule, borders and decorations. With marbled endpapers and a gilt top edge. Just a hint of very light fox spotting to the fore edge, and to very occasional leaf margins, impacting no text. A tiny crease to the upper corners of two leaf margins. A super fine binding of the author's most uncommon first novel, written whilst he was working for the publisher Gerald Duckworth. Powell estimated that circa 2,000 copies of this first impression were printed. His advance was a mighty £25 but with the added bonus that he was to oversee the entire publication: "The production of the book itself - with the natural admonition that everything about it must be cheap - [was] left in my own hands. I think the final result not discreditable, showing the extent to which a volume of decent appearance could be achieved at that date without undue expense; something Duckworth's did not always being about in their list" - 'Messengers of Day'.
