This book celebrates the singular vision of Britain's capital city by Edward Bawden (1903- 1989),painter,illustrator and graphic artist. With over 200 illustrations, the book draws together the best of Bawden's prints, posters, paintings, murals and advertising illustration,as well as previously unpublished material from Bawden's personal scrapbooks. It includes works from his student days at the Royal College of Art in the 1920s,to the Morley college murals in partnership with Eric Ravilious and Charles Mahoney,to the remarkable 45-foot concertina mural created for the Lion and Unicorn Pavilion at the 1951 Festival of Britain.Edward Bawden's prolific career also spanned advertising work for London Transport, Fortnum & Mason,Twinnings and Shell,as well as a series of exquisite linocuts and lithographs. This book captures the magic of London as seen through Bawden's eyes and beautifully illustrates how the enduringly modern spirit of his work came to be stamped so firmly on the public's consciousness. Edward Bawden (1903-1989) Born Braintree,Essex. Studied at Cambridge School of Art and the Royal College of Art (1922),where he worked under Paul Nash* and was a contemporary and close friend of Eric Ravilious* and Douglas Percy Bliss. After gaining his Diploma in Book Illustration (1925), he continued to study engraving and book binding at the Central School of Arts and Crafts.Part time teacher of Graphic Design at the Royal College of Art (from 1930) and later at the Royal Academy Schools and Goldsmiths College School of Art.He worked regularly for the Curwen Press in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Edward Bawden is a designer and illustrator of great originality with wide experience of different techniques and methods of reproduction. For illustration he draws in pen and ink with washes of clear colour on non-absorbent paper, but he also worked with lithography,lino-cuts and occasionally stencils. An inspired and incisive draughtsman,he uses line with economy and a sharp wit.He has also produced delightful and accomplished water colours of Essex landscapes. As an official war artist, working with the British Army in France in 1940,he made a series of sensitive drawings, some of the best representing the battered harbour at Dunkirk; his later war work in the Middle East was even more descriptively powerful. Prize winner in the Francis Williams Book Illustration Award for 1977 and 1982.He produced work for various periodicals and magazines: Curwen Press Newsletter,House & Garden,The Listener and Vogue.Elected RA (1956).
