A school acquaintance sent the author what he had written in the first week of October,1967.What he had written could not
be called a novel,or even,in the form in which the author received it,a book of any
kind. The acquaintance knew that what he had written (or compiled, for not all the material had actually been written by him)
was of great interest as a 'human document'.Forming a framework, necessitated
the writing of a good deal of additional material, spending many hours retracing his
acquaintance's steps, visiting all the places he had visited, making notes, trying to reconstruct the events of that week.In this way,he built up a body of material that would serve as a complement to the more personal, more selective material that
the acquaintance had provided.
The most important item in the original material was a diary, written each day from
Sunday,1st October,to Sunday,8th October.
It was from this that the author gleaned most of his information as to his movements. It also determined the form of the book, which falls into eight sections,
corresponding to those eight days.Indeed,
the two outer sections - those covering the two Sundays - consist entirely of the diary entries for those days.In the rest of the book the author has also incorporated the other material that was provided - notes of various kinds, photostat pages from two books belonging
to the public library, transcripts of tape-recordings.A small selection of the newspaper cuttings that he began to collect in June,1967 - three months prior to the week in question - have been placed
separately in an appendix at the back of the book. These are not, strictly speaking,
part of the story, and need not be read from beginning to end. However, the author will draw the reader's attention to individual items at certain points in the narrative.Author's debut novel.
