Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable for a book of it's age and nature, i.e. a p/back Proof,and even internally,the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation.It is only the exterior faults/and other minor flaws described, that prevent a better grading. An original but very scarce Proof copy.An opportunity to own the original first appearance of this title as an alternative to the modern,more expensive re-issues. Alec Nove is/was the James Bonar Professor of Economics at the University of Glasgow and author of 'The Soviet Economy'. The author deals with many aspects of Soviet political economy,planning problems, and statistics.Starting with an attempt to evaluate the rationality of Stalinism,he discusses the possible political consequences of the search for greater economic efficiency,and this is followed by a controversial discussion of Kremlinology. The next two groups of chapters are respectively concerned with industrial and agricultural problems,and include an anlysis of the situation of the peasants as this is reflected in literary journals.The essay on social welfare (unlike some of the author's other work) has been used in the Soviet press as evidence against over-enthusiastic cold-warriors,among whom the author is not always popular. There are also elaborate statistical surveys of occupational patterns and the purchasing power of wages,and a chapter which seeks to examine the irrational statistical reflection of irrational economic decisions.The final chapter seeks to generalize about the evolution of world communism.All those interested in Soviet affairs will find a great deal to interest them in this thought provoking volume.
