136 pages (complete). A RARE copy of a fascinating book that gives unique insight on commercial activity in Russia, China and Japan mainly towards the end of the 19th Century. Metcalf was a ship engineer and travelled widely. This memoir of his travels and insights was written so that his grandchildren would know of his experiences. It has a distinctive voice and Metcalf was not shy of opinion. Printed in wartime this book is in general good condition. The board cover is sure and tight. It has some mild wear to the head and foot of the spien and the corners have shelf depressions. The covers have surface marks and stains. Inside, the frontispage is missing. The guttering along the frontis-plate is open but the security of the binding is not compromised. The pages are firm, eventful, neat, clean, clear.
