UK,8vo HB+protected dw/dj,1st edn.[(James) Gomer Berry,1st Viscount Kemsley,1883-1968 was a Welsh colliery owner and newsaper publisher.He originally co-owned 'The Daily Telegraph' with his second brother Lord Camrose,and Lord Burnham.He founded Kemsley Newspapers,which owned 'The Sunday Times', 'The Daily Sketch' and 'The Sunday Graphic' amongst its titles.Berry was also Chairman of the Reuters News Agency from 1951-1958. In 1959 Kemsley Newspapers was bought by Lord Thomson. As owner of Kemsley Newspapers,Viscount Kemsley made several written contributions to his in-house journal 'The Kemsley Writer'.Kemsley also oversaw the publication of this large format hardcover book,'The Kemsley Manual of Journalism (Cassell & Co.,Ltd.,1950). Sub-titled: 'A Comprehensive Guide to the Practice and Principles of Modern Journalism',featuring an introduction by Kemsley and an essay from his Foreign Manager Ian Fleming,later the author of the James Bond novels.] FINE/VG++.No owner inscrptn and no price-clip (25s.) to protected dw/dj.Dw/dj protected by clear cellophane cover.Bright,clean,matt,black background with white lettering and red underlines to front panel,dulled vignette illustrated spine/backstrip and plain rear panel; with negligible shelf-wear and creasing to edges and corners - some nicks and tears present.Closed tears - each to top+bottom edges of both front+rear panels of dw/dj; all corners chipped/rubbed - each with minimal loss and majority of creasing and chipping along top edges of dw/dj. Uncommon to find with dw/dj - this dw/dj 99% complete - its faults due in part - to the fragility and quality of the thinnish paper used and is commonly missing or discarded through excessive damage.Top edge slightly toned with some minimal,sporadic dust-soiling foxing/spotting towards the headband area and a single small spot towards the fore-edge,fore-edges slightly brighter,cleaner and a handful of tiny spots/blemishes - doesn't appear to be foxing/spotting; contents bright,tight, clean,solid and sound,text body and page margins are a brilliant white,bright and crisp with no foxing/spotting - virtually pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners,appears unread - apart from my own collation.Bright,crisp,clean, sharp-cornered,publisher's original plain khaki buckram cloth bds with bright,crisp, stamped gilt letters within a red panel,to spine/backstrip and near immaculate plain white eps with the merest hint of off-set foxing from dw/djs' inner flaps.UK,8vo HB+ dw/dj,1st edn,v-xiiipp+3-424pp+xvii-xlvipp [paginated] includes an introduction by Viscount Kemsley,contents list/table,Books One to Eight comprising 43 sections/ contributions,profuse contemporary b/w illustrations/cartoons,facsimile reproductions and photographs interspersed throughout the text and the book,an appendix (newspaper glossary),an index and to the rear,30pp of journalism-related advertisements,plus [unpaginated] b/w vignetted half-title page and title page. Book of particular note as an association with Ian Fleming.With it being a very detailed guide to the entire range of newspaper work and the careers it offers,it is an analysis for the general reader of the principles,standards and codes of a free Press,and a textbook for courses of study in journalism,the whole being written by editors and other leading authorities in the newspaper industry. Introduction by Viscount Kemsley and Ian Fleming contributes,'Foreign News',a nine-page article.Fleming,was at the time, was the Foreign Manager of Kemsley Newspapers.Avery early,first book contribution by Ian Fleming.
