Robert Kelly (b. 1935) is an American poet who is associated with the Deep Image movement of poetry. The term, "Deep Image," was invented by Kelly himself and fellow poet Jerome Rothenberg to describe a style of poetry, including their own, characterized by introspection, resonance, and stylization. Many of Kelly's works have been published by the Black Sparrow Press, which is still in business to this day. Back colophon: "Printed September 1983 in Santa Barbara & Ann Arbor from the Black Sparrow Press by Graham Mackintosh & Edwards Brothers Inc. Design by Barbara Martin. This edition is published in paper wrappers, there are 250 hardcover copies numbered & signed by the author; 50 numbered copies have been handbound in boards by Earle Gray, each containing a unique holographic painting & poem by the author, from the Fourth Series of The Mirsuvian Calligraphies, 4/50 [handwritten in red ink], Robert Kelly [signed in black ink]." Excerpt by Kelly about the title and poems of the book: "Under words. I was wondering what lay beneath them, the things I said and meant and used, some of, only some of, to build poems. For years their surface had been enough, and then that history (half-fanciful, half-documented) we call etymology. But I wanted a spiritual etymology, to lead the word back--but not now to some Indo-European root, but to its root in my experience, mind in action, tree in the world.". Book.
