This book grew out of a major study on the secret
opposition to Hitler in Germany and their attempts
to overthrow or assasinate the dictator. It attempts to answer the crucial question:how difficult was it for a would-be assassin to gain access to Hitler's person, how well protected was Hitler? The basis for an answer is a close examination of Hitler's residences, military headquarters, means of transportation, personal guard organisations and bodyguard detachments.
The book describes all known security measures taken to protect Hitler's life;it discusses possibilities for doing away with Hitler, including
aerial attacks by Allied bombers;and it describes the major assassination attempts against Hitler that have come to light. The limits of a popular
leader's security become clear, and the reults of the investigation amply illustrate central traits in Hitler's personality, particularly his preference for risk-taking,for 'playing va banque'
as he himself put it.
