Novel dedicated to 'that born fighter and Modern Crusader,the American Doughboy and about the AEF (American Expeditionary Force) in England and France. John Hay Beith remembered as a,novelist, playwright,essayist and historian who wrote under the pen name Ian Hay and best remembered for 'The First Hundred Thousand' (1915) particularly and the sequel 'Carrying On - After the First Hundred Thousand',1917 (see my book ID rja777018 - UK 1st edn with dw). His good-humoured account of army life, 'The First Hundred Thousand' was a best-seller. With the outbreak of war in 1914,Beith joined the army as a second lieutenant in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.In France in April 1915,he was one of the first 100,000 of Kitchener's Army. During the war,Beith serving as an officer in the army in France,he was mentioned in despatches and promoted to Capt in 1915 and in 1916 was awarded the Military Cross for action in the battle of Loos,awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) and promoted to Major in 1918. Since April 2013 and again in March 2015, and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template,altering it's prices,weight allowances,dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!
