First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 313pp. Green cloth lettered in gold at the spine and with the publisher's vibrant blue top edge stain. Publisher's new price label affixed over the original one printed to the base of the front flap. A novel set in Haiti under the rule of François 'Papa Doc' Duvalier. Duvalier was perhaps understandably unhappy with the novel and his Minister of Foreign Affairs produced a pamphlet in response which labelled Greene "A liar, a cretin, a stool-pigeon . unbalanced, sadistic, perverted . a perfect ignoramus . lying to his heart's content . the shame of proud and noble England . a spy . a drug addict . a torturer." Greene subsequently confessed that he always found the final epithet a little puzzling. Wobbe A48.. Book. Book Condition: Near Fine. Binding: Hardcover.
