A very uncommon example - particularly of this 2nd edn title - with a dw/dj,in a book of its age,and given it's period of production,i.e. 1940-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of cheap paper stock generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+ printers.Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and prone to subsequent disintegration and usually discarded. With war-time paper rationing and conservation of that and other materials, pulping was actively encouraged, so publishers with restricted and limited quantities for publishing, opted towards highly acidic and therefore cheaper paper, allowing for more books to be produced. Books made with this cheaper material tend to degrade faster, exhibiting several faults,blemishes,foxing/spotting etc.,and subsequently are uncommon and harder to find in a particularly fine condition.
Pale cream background with orange+black design with white lettered title (99%) to centre, black numbers to orange sector, white letters to black sector of the design and orange lettered author to front panel and similar title/author/price (7/6 NET)/publisher name,to slightly darkened spine, rear panel with slightly grubbed white background and orange+black lettered publisher's blurb - all discolouration and other imperfections commensurate with book's age, book's production and therefore with some fragility and some minimal foxing/spotting.Negligible shelf-wear, bumping, creasing to edges and corners,a small closed tear to rear, top edge and at head of spine's front gutter another small closed tear with miniscule loss.Foxing/ spotting internally to dw/dj bleeding through to rear panel, whilst to front panel internally,dw/dj design inks bled through and are reverse mirrored.Top edges lightly toned from slight dust-soiling and with merest and faintest hint of foxing/ spotting,fore-edges brighter and also with minimal, sporadic foxing/spotting;contents bright, tight, exceptionally clean - text body virtually foxing-free with the foxing restricted to pages' top+fore-edges,solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread apart from my own collation.Bright, crisp, clean, sharp-cornered,publisher's original lemon yellow cloth boards/covers with bright, crisp, stamped black ink letters to spine, immaculate plain white pastedowns, verso+ recto of front free endpaper and rear endpaper respectively, both with off-set shadowing from dw/dj's respective inner flaps, both hinges solid and sound without any tears, splits or cracking.UK,slim 12mo HB+dw/dj,2nd edn,v-vipp+1-186pp [paginated] includes contents list/table with author's initialled disclaimer to its reverse,XXIII(23) chapters, plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages.
