Kate Pollack is a girl who likes to get to the bottom of things. An only child and intensely motherly, she worries about Squib,a wordless waif of a boy,who is always in the park when she goes there with Robin and Prue and Sammy, and always stays when they leave. He wears strange, frilly,old-fashioned clothes, and Kate almost believes that he is the ghost of her much-loved brother who was drowned years before.
Squib is surrounded by a mystery Kate has
to solve: why is he sometimes covered in bruises; why does he never speak; who is he really? But by becoming involved,Kate finds herself in a terrifying situation she is unable to cope with.
In Kate,Nina Bawden has created one of her most memorable characters.Shirley Hughes' atmospheric illustrations enhance the text.
