Eric Wood (1855 – 1940), pseud. of F. Knowles Campling,an English Editor of juvenile magazines,including 'Chums' (1915–18),and wrote both juvenile fiction and non-fiction. Boy's historical military adventure fiction.Story from WW1,British and Boers against the Germans set in South Africa. Another uncommonly presentable item,this example has survived exceptionally well, particularly without any dw/dj protection - as issued - particularly in respect to the book overall,and unusually,without the usual major discolouration and other imperfections usually encountered or expected in a children's book of this age. Archibald Bertram Webb (b. Ashford, Kent, 1887 – d. 1944),studied at St. Martin's School of Art,and later taught art at the Perth Technical College,Western Australia. He was a wood engraver,poster and commercial artist,competent illustrator and landscape painter who emigrated to Australia in 1915,but briefly returned to the UK in 1934.He signed his work A.B. Webb,as seen in his famous poster advertising Wales,for the Great Western Railway. A.B. Webb was known for his pictures of the Australian landscape and his use of woodcuts.He frequently exhibited at the Fine Art Society. Webb was popular as an illustrator for boys' adventure stories.Webb illustrated around 150 books for a range of authors, either in first editions or reissues. Contributed to several periodicals: The Captain,Chums (Editor),The Empire Annual, The Girl's Realm,Herbert Strang's Annuals, Little Folks,and The Quiver.
