In 'PUFFBALL' Fay Weldon explores the conflicts which underlie even the most conventional of lives - the eternal struggle between female and male,the spirit and the flesh,reason and desire. At the centre of the novel are a young married couple,Richard and Liffey,and the story traces what happens to them after they acquire a country cottage in the middle of Somerset,Liffey moving to live there while her husband stays on in London,seeing her only at weekends.Liffey is pregnant,and the theme is the way in which women,as the bearers of children,are at the mercy of their biological impulses: defined by their bodies often against their will.
'PUFFBALL',though,is no polemic,and is full of the wit and acute observation that have established Fay Weldon's reputation.Richard and Liffey themselves,their suspicious neighbours, the Tuckers, Richard's London lover,Bella - all are players in a shared comedy of manners,in which the reader's delight is heightened by the knowledge that Miss Weldon's purpose goes far beyond the need simply to entertain.
