Edited by Rabbi Shmuel Hakohen Weingarten. “A Collection of Letters”, Bshvach Yishuv Ha’aretz, presents facsimile reproductions and texts of fifty letters penned by some of Eastern Europe’s outstanding and lesser known orthodox Rabbinic figures endorsing the agricultural colonization of Eretz Israel in the latter half of the nineteenth century. These letters were collected by an emissary of Akiva Yosef Schlesinger in the 1870’s amongst a year long journey from Palestine to Vienna (to garner financial support from Baron Rothschild) , visiting local Jewish communities and obtaining the legal opinion and written support of the local community Rabbi’s in Turkey, Hungary, Galicia, and Rumania along the way. These letters of endorsement for the project of setting up Jewish agricultural villages forms the basis of this album of facsimile letters; includes detailed historical biographies of the Rabbis and the communities visited of the time.
