UK,8vo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn thus.VG+.No owner inscrptn per se,but School Prize bookplate to front pastedown+date (1935- 36).Bright,crisp,clean,reasonably sharp-cornered - 3 tips with light pushing, publisher's original tan cloth bds with bright,crisp,black ink blocked highly decoratived design with black ink letters to both front board+spine/backstrip,rear board/cover plain and undecorated and with minimal grubbing; with negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks,tears,splits or fraying present,and clean plain white eps,the rear free endpaper with an accidental(?) oblique angled double crease,both hinges solid and sound - without any splits,tears or cracking.Top edges lightly toned from light dust-soiling,but still bright with faint,minimal,sporadic foxing/spotting, fore-edges similarly,but slightly brighter and also with sporadic foxing/spotting; contents bright,tight,clean - text body nearly foxing-free,solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners,appears unread - apart from my own collation.Any discolouring and other imperfections commensurate with book's age and therefore some minimal foxing/spotting present.UK,8vo HB minus dw/dj,1st edn,7- 288pp [paginated] includes VIII (8) chapters,4 b/w illustrations frntis included by Alfred Pearse - all called for and present,plus [unpaginated] b/w illus frntis,title page with dedication to reverse,contents list/table,and individual chapter separator pages.Boy's Secret Sevice adventure story set in India. Another uncommonly presentable item,this example has survived exceptionally well, particularly without the dw/dj's protection - particularly in respect to the book,and unusually,without the usual major discolouring and other imperfections usually encountered or expected in a children's book of this age. CAPT., F[rederick] A[nnesley] M[ichael] born St. Albans,Herts 27th June,1886 - died Coggeshall,Essex,11th April 1949.UK soldier (King's African Rifles),athletics coach and author,in active service during WW1,who also published as Michael Annesley; much of his work related to athletics,and his best known book in this field being the non-fiction 'Athletes in Action.' (1931).In fact,he wrote more than thirty books on athletics,the Olympic Games,and related topics,championing field-events in Britain.Included in his children's fiction he also wrote several sci-fi novels. Alfred Pearse (1856-1933).Black and white artist,painter of figure subjects and portrait miniatures,wood engraver.Lived in London.Studied wood-engraving (1972-5); worked as a 'special' artist for the 'Pictorial World' periodical (1879-86) and for 'The Sphere' on the Royal colonial tour (1901-03)and contributed to 'The Boy's Own Paper for 45 years (1878-1923). Thorpe describes his work as 'competent without showing much personality',and records that he was known as 'Punctual Pearse'.He contributed two miniature paintings to Queen Mary's doll's house.
