Complete set of eight original bookplates designed by Lynd Ward for the Antioch Book Company. No date, circa 1940s. Each of the bookplates measures 3" x 4." Each bookplate is unused and virtually pristine and intact. Each bookplate and the entire collection are Fine. A complete set of beautiful bookplates designed by Lynd Ward (1905-1985), an American artist and author. Ward is best-known for his woodcut prints and wordless novels featuring the medium. He also worked with other art media including lithography, mezzotint, oil painting, ink painting, and watercolor. Each bookplate in this set has a blue, orange-brown, or olive-brown monochromatic color palette and features a darker foreground over a fainter background. Ernest Morgan, the founder of the Antioch Book Company, described the aesthetic of these bookplates and the contrast between their foregrounds and backgrounds as "[conveying] a feeling of depth in time as well as space." The bookplates in this set feature the following subjects: (1) a man reading a book with a ship in the background, (2) a man carrying wheat and a book with the cosmos pictured over a city in the background, (3) a man looking at a mountain behind which light rays radiate from the horizon, (4) a blacksmith superimposed over images of industry, (5) a man planting seeds in a rural landscape with the specter of a towering urban environment in the background, (6) a quaint cottage and trees on the pages of a book in a starry sky, (7) a musician playing the guitar with faint images representing the history of music in the background, and (8) an owl behind which is a library illuminated by lamplight..
