Letter handwritten in brown ink on beige paper. Paper has Royal Irish Linen, Marcus Ward & Co. watermark. Datelined November 19, 1879 in Washington, D.C. 5" x 8." One page. Letter reads: "Washington, D.C., Nov. 19, 1879, Dear Sir, I have yours of the 16th, and shall be glad to assist you in this way you ask whenever it is in my power. As present, however, I know of no vacancy in situations such as you want. Very truly yours, M. R. Waite." "Mr. Eugene S. Didier," the addressee, is also handwritten below his signature. Former ownership inscription on the back in pencil briefly describes how Waite is responding to an application Morrison R. "Mott" Waite (1816-1888) was an attorney and the 7th Chief Justice of the United States. He served from 1874-1888 and was nominated by President Ulysses S. Grant. An abolitionist, Waite was instrumental in interpreting Reconstruction-era amendments that granted more freedom toward freed slaves. He also helped establish the concept of corporate personhood in law and was known for seeking a balance between state and federal power.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
