8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a fascinating pair [2] of original manuscript ship's logs and relics of America's post World War I flood of immigrants and marine commerce. Dated 1922 and 1923 [entries up to April 17th] handwritten by a deck hand and dockyard worker and likely a manager or supernumerary named "W. Henney" [we believe his first name was William and he was from Staten Island, New York]. The large page-a-day books detail the duties, statistics, cargoes and observations as he worked with, processed and sometimes sailed with, various immigrant ships including the SS LITUANIA, SS LATVIA, SS ESTONIA, SS POLOVIA, among others. The ships were responsible for picking up and transporting immigrants to Ellis Island, New York. The book is full as he did not miss a day without recording something and there are many names given. He writes of cargo, weather, ports visited, number of passengers and missing passengers, detainees, stowaways, cargo, baggage, customs, deaths of crew and passengers with funerals, injuries, ship captains, inspections+++. Historians and researchers of the era and the immigration issue at that time will appreciate that these writings occur with the backdrop of American legislators working feverishly to change American policies and did so in 1924 with The Immigration Act of 1924 also known as The Johnson-Reed Act. The book measures 9 x 5¾ inches is showing only minimal wear (with some finger prints, coffee stains etc and is overall G+.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good+
