Built in 1773 in Depford, the HMS Ambuscade was a 32-gun fifth rate frigate that took part in the Revolutionary Wars, until she was captured by the French ship Bayonnaise in 1798. In 1803, she was recaptured by the British, but broken up in 1810. The artist, William Adlam, was a British naval officer who served in both the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. During the latter, he often served with Lord Nelson, including the Battle of Trafalgar.
