The establishment of the United Dutch East India Company in 1602,was expected to be a rich commercial venture in which both the merchants and people of the Netherlands would be able to subscibe, but also provide a unifying political power with which to combat the might of Spain. At it's height during the middle and end of the 17thC it was as powerful as many European nations, achieving a monopoly of trade in the Far East. Towards the end of the 17thC its six chambers, forming the United Company, maintained over 200 capital ships, 15,000 sailors and more than 15,000 soldiers, merchants and other officials. Its trading empire stretched over a quarter of the world, from the Cape of Good Hope to India,Ceylon,Java and the East Indies, the Spice Islands and northwards to Japan and China. The company's vessels laden with silver and gold bullion for trade with the Far East sailed from their home ports in three annual fleets; the 'Funfair Fleet' which departed in September, the 'Christmas Fleet' in January and the 'Easter Fleet' in April or May,although sometimes due to contrary weather or for commercial reasons these dates were extended for a month or two as was the case with the "Hollandia" which did not set sail until July 3rd,1743.Setting off,on her maiden voyage, from Texel. For some inexplicable reason the ship was northwest of the Isles of Scilly having been blown off her course by contrary winds. She struck the Gunner Rock, off St. Agnes.sinking in 22 fathoms depth of water. Her guns were fired as a signal of distress and later many bodies were found floating or on the shores of St. Mary's and other islands. The wreck was discovered by Rex Cowan's team of professional divers,in September,1971. An uncommon, nautical related item. Since April,2013,the UK Post Office has increased it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering its weight allowances, dimensions and lowered its compensation rates too!
