Uhlman, Gus : Original Hand-drawn Cartoon by Gus Uhlman Showing Bill O'Brien, Ethel B. Arnold, and Jane Sharp, c. 1935

Signed by the artist in black ink at the bottom on front: "Gus Uhlman." Original hand-drawn cartoon on beige paper done in a variety of media, namely pencil, black ink, a white wash (corrections and highlights), and possibly crayon. The drawing is in black-and-white and features three people, Bill O'Brien, Ethel B. Arnold, and Jane Sharp. There is a satirical bent to the cartoon as O'Brien is depicted as an angel who rains down cash from either hand over the two tennis players. The two women are portrayed with more seriousness as they are shown in fierce poses, seemingly mid-action during a tennis match. No date, circa 1935. 8 1/2" x 15 1/4." There is handwritten text in pencil clipped on the right side, but this would have been a message to the printer and is not intended to be part of the scene in the cartoon. Drawing is very clean and intact except for light smudging throughout (which may be from the art media used for the drawing), a diagonal crease about center running from top to bottom, a few pinholes on the left side, and slight wear to the extremities. A Very Good copy. An original drawing by Gus Uhlman, an artist known for his sports illustration. Includes faint borders in pencil are for the printing of the cartoon. The depictions of Bill O'Brien, Ethel B. Arnold, and Jane Sharp each come with an accompanying caption. The following are their captions. O'Brien: "Promoter Bill O'Brien who is bringing the ladies into pro-tennis ranks for the first time since 1926." Arnold: "--She wanted to see the world!--Particularly New Orleans!" Sharp: "--She wants to keep improving her game!" Bill O'Brien, as noted by the caption, was the promoter of Ethel B. Arnold and Jane Sharp. Ethel B. Arnold (?-?) and Jane Sharp (1913-?) were both professional tennis players in the United States. Sharp specialized in women's indoor tennis and was active from 1920-1937. Her crowning achievement was winning the 1935 U.S. Indoor tournament. Arnold and Sharp partnered with Bill Tilden (1893-1953) and other male tennis players for a professional national tour. The tour saw small crowds as Arnold and Sharp were not household names, and Tilden either easily won his games or his rivals' did not have name recognition. During the tour, Arnold and Sharp faced off against each other, but Sharp withdrew from the tour after becoming injured on April 20, 1937. Sharp later returned to the game that same year to partner with Tilden for a tour in Japan. Sharp played in front of large crowds for seven matches against Sanae Okada, of which Sharp won four..
