F., Rail Road Flat, Calaveras Co, Cal." and two emblems of a beehive and a bow with arrows printed at the top. Signed by three Trustees of the Independence Lodge, No. 150, E. A.[?] Lewis, J. T. [...], and D. W. Sawyer. Addressed to the officers and members of Independence Lodge, No. 158. Dated "May 7th, 1880." 7 3/4" x 10." One page. Letter, handwriting, and signatures are very clean and intact. In this letter, the trustees of Independence Lodge, No. 150 report to the officers and members of Independence Lodge, No. 158, that the valuation of their property is $600.00 and that it will be insured at that amount. The trustees say the insurance will cost $18.00 for one year beginning from July 25, 1880 to July 25, 1881. The International Organization of Odd Fellows (I. O. O. F.) is a Masonic organization that promotes recreational activities as well as ethics based on reciprocity and charity. The I. O. O. F. began as an fraternal organization in 1819 but began to admit women over the age of eighteen in 1894. Rail Road Flat is a historic mining town in Calaveras County, California that was settled by gold seekers in 1849.
