James Merrick (1720-1769), scholar, poet and fellow of Trinity College Oxford, was evidently highly regarded by his contemporaries as the list of subscribers in the first volume is extensive. This is appears to be a subscriber's copy, with the bookplate of the Earl of Portsmouth and pencilled note ‘a Duplicate’. John Wallop (1690-1762) was a favourite of George I and was created Viscount Lymington in 1720 and first Earl of Portsmouth in 1743, a couple of years after this book was printed. In the list of subscribers John Wallop is not credited with taking more than one copy, although he may have done so or may have acquired another later, perhaps through the Hon. Charles Wallop who is listed next to him. Triphiodorus was a poet and grammarian from Egypt writing circa 300 AD. He is also known as the author of new version of the Odyssey in which a particular letter of the alphabet was omitted from each book.
