75 pages (complete). The Black Renaissance Convention in 1974 was a pivotal moment in the development of the Black Consciousness movement in South Africa. Against expectations it involved a considerable opposition to the 'mild' policies of the older generation by the younger wing of the movement. This led, in the manifesto (printed at the back of this book), to the first direct call for political action against the apartheid regime. The book was published just weeks after the Soweto Uprisings of June 1976. Several of the contributors (including Rev S Mhkatshwa who had written the introduction - he was detained without trial) were caught up in the security sweep that followed. The papers included are from amongst the most influential in the BC movement. Their contribution was immense. The papers delivered at this Convention are critical in any understanding of the opposition forces in Apartheid South Africa. Contributors: Thoahlane Thoahlane (foreword), Rev S P Mkhatshwa (Introduction), G M Nkondo, Dr Manas Buthelezi, Mafika Pascal Gwala, Dr Fatima Meer, S M Motsuenyane, Harold Nxasana, Foszia Fisher (whose husband was assassinated by the state the following year), Rt Re v Mandlenkosi A Zwane (Bishop of Swaziland) and Prof James H Cone. The Declaration is included. All became leaders in the new South Africa after 1994. It is impossible to understate the provocation this book would have been to the security police - especially the time of its publication: July 1976. This copy is of the first printing. The book has been much owned. The cover is scratched, scuffed and worn. Nonetheless it is sure and resolute. Inside, the frontispage has previous owner signatures.
