Bright,crisp,clean,glossy laminated,full cover colour pictorial cartoon by Norman Thelwell,illustrated front panel of dw/dj,with red+black lettering,colour vignette cartoon to rear panel; with negligible shelf-wear or creasing to edges and corners - no major nicks or tears present. A small approx 1" x 1" triangular loss to front top edge of dw/dj towards head of spine/backstrip's gutter's edge - the only major loss.Some miniscule bumping/ chipping and rubbing to both head+foot of spine/ backstrip of dw/dj,with some slight chipping/ breakdown of laminate to part of rear top edge. Sporadic foxing/spotting to front and rear top edges of dw/dj and also the vertical edges of both front+rear inner flaps of dw/dj.Top edges slightly dust-soiled with subsequent slight ageing and it's ubiquitous foxing/spotting from it,fore-edges brighter and cleaner but also with some minimal,sporadic foxing/spotting; contents generally bright,tight,clean,solid and sound - some minimal foxing/spotting to prelims - majority of body of text/book foxing free - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners, would appear unread - apart from my own collation.Bright,crisp,clean,sharp-cornered, publisher's original dark blue cloth boards with black ink printed cartoon illustrated front board,and a black ink cartoon vignette printed to rear board too,black lettering to spine/ backstrip and clean plain white endpapers. Described hard but fairly and honestly - probably in too much detail - but still an acceptable copy - faults notwithstanding! An uncommon title and highly sought after for completists.A striking example 1st edn,in Thelwell's bold and comedic style and will be an important and welcome addition to the Thelwell canon.
Norman Thelwell (b. 1923 - d. 2004.) Born in Birkenhead,near Liverpool.Served in the East Yorkshire Regiment during WW2.Art editor of army publications in New Delhi (1945-47).Studied at Liverpool College of Art (1947-50).Lecturer at Wolverhampton College of Art (1950-55).He began contributing to 'Punch' (satirical magazine) in 1952,and since 1955 worked freelance as a book,magazine and commercial illustrator.His subject's are taken mainly from the countryside and rural pursuits - he is best known for his humorously depicted shaggy ponies with diminutive but irrepressible girl riders,but he is alo a dedicated landscape watercolourist and draughtsman,and in his comic drawings the cartoon-style humans and animals are generally set against naturalistic landscape backgrounds.He has produced more than 20 humorous books (many of which have also been published abroad) and his cartoon characters have been used to decorate a wide range of products including tee shirts and crockery.
His books include such diverse titles as Angels on Horseback (Equestrian - 1957), Three Sheets in the Wind (Nautical - 1973) and Up the Garden Path (Horticulture - 1967; see my book ID rja532115.).
