THELWELL was brought up in Birkenhead,in England's industrial north-west.One of his greatest childhood pleasures was to be taken for an outing in a rowing boat on a nearby lake.Ever since then he has been in love with boats and water.Some thirty years later he began to realize his dream - to have an open stretch of water beside his own house,where he might paint,fish, row and above all watch - watch the changing light and seasons and the wild-life of rural Hampshire.Here,in this book,he describes; in words and pictures,
how he landscaped his cottage garden,dug a pool (which he subsequently enlarged), created three little islands,built a stone bridge and a boathouse and found himself living beside a long stretch of water which sustained a lively fish and insect population and attracted wild birds of all kinds - coots, moorhens, ducks, swans, geese, herons, cormorants and many others. These inhabitants of the pool,the islands, and the surrounding countryside come vividly to life in the author's many enchanting pen drawings.His tale evokes the strenuous efforts, the quiet pleasures,and the hilarious escapades which have characterized his life at Heron's Mead.
