Collection of six original billheads printed in black ink on light beige paper. Also includes handwriting in black ink. Bound with a metal fastener in upper-left corner. Datelined January 11, 15, and 22, February 1 and 22, and April 28, 1898 in Auburn, California. 8 1/2" x 14." Billheads are very clean and intact overall except for light age toning, a few horizontal fold lines, slight wrinkling, and the occasional stain. There is staining at the top edge on back of the January 11 billhead. Each billhead and the entire collection are Very Good. A collection of six original billheads from the Towle Bros. Company (Towle Bros. Co.) of Auburn, California to Kenison, Johnson & Company, brewers' agents who were also based in Auburn. Kenison, Johnson & Co. purchased multiple line items. Four of the billheads have a list of purchases that reach the bottom of the page. Much of the items' descriptions are numerical specifications but words are also included such as "Shavings," "Bed," "Crown," "Panel Mould," "Wainscott Cap," "Q. A. Casing," "Apron," "glass," "Putty & Paints," "Spruce [--?]," "Sash Cord," "Corner Blox," "Window stool," "Hand Rail," "Lath," "Astragal," "Parting Bead," and "Sash Weights." The printed header reads, "Bought of The Towle Bros. Co., Dealers in Sugar Pine, Spruce, Fir and Hard Pine Lumber, Sash, Doors and Blinds, Shingles, Shakes, Laths, Moldings, Fence Posts and Pickets." J. H. Robie is named as the company agent. The Towle Brothers Company was a lumber business founded about1859 by Allen Towle (1833-1897) and his brothers, George W. Towle and Edwin Towle. They opened their first sawmill in 1859 at Lost Camp (present-day Blue Canyon). Their company soon catapulted to success with business from local miners and eventually the Central Pacific Railroad. The Towle Bros. Co. operated several sawmills in the region including places such as Dutch Flat, Truckee, and Donner Lake. They also had a blacksmith shop, wood-pulp mil, planing mill, and their own private narrow-gauge railroad. Among their high-volume orders were railroad ties for the Central Pacific Railroads and timber for mines at the Comstock Lode. Towle Bros. Co. remained in business until 1966 when it was dissolved..
