An original document, a Transcript on Appeal, relating to the appellate case, "The People of the State of California vs. John Williams, alis John Hanlon," in which Hanlon appealed his conviction and eight-year prison sentence in San Quentin State Prison for felony burglary of the second degree. The full title on front cover reads, "Attorneys for Stevens were Jno. T. Carroll and E. M. Sweeney. Attorney for the People of California was Wm. S. Barnes. This document is a printed transcript of the original case, "The People of the State of California vs. John Williams, alias John Hanlon." The transcript includes the "Arraignment," "Assignment," "Certificate to Judgment Roll," "Charge of the Court," "Clerk's Certificate," "Bill of Exceptions," "Defendant's Instructions," "Information," "Judgment," "Motion for a New Trial," "Notice of Appeal," and "Trial and Verdict." The transcript includes witness testimonies including those of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Sechrist, a couple living in San Francisco and the victims of the crime. The testimonies shed light on further details of the crime. On February 18, 1896, Mrs. Sechrist found that her residence, the top flat at 1020 Sutter Street, had been broken into and that several personal items belonging to her and her husband were missing. Among the stolen items were pins, a fur cape, opera glasses, collectable coins, and a Smith & Wesson revolver. Other witnesses called to the stand were Maria Bormaisson, who lived in the bottom flat of the same building, and two police officers, T. C. Murphy and Chas. Crockett. The testimonies by Bormaisson and the officers identified three men who had broken into the Sechrists' residence. Murphy testified that Hanlon had several of the Sechrists' belongings on him when he had been arrested and that Hanlon had said to him that he had no "room" and was "from the East" (implying that Hanlon was likely a transient man). The transcript also discloses some of Hanlon's aliases including John W. Williams, J. Hanley, and Neal (or O'Neal). The jury found Hanlon guilty of felony burglary of the second degree, and he was sentenced to eight years in San Quentin. According to statements in this Transcript, burglary of the first degree is defined as having been committed at night (between sunset and sunrise) and burglary of the second degree is defined as having been committed during the day.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding
