Black cloth-covered boards with string binding. Gilt lettering on front cover reads, "Photographs." Leaves are made of black paper. No date, circa 1910s-1920s. Album: 12" x 9 3/4." Photo size varies between about 2" x 2 3/4" and 5 1/4" x 3." Unpaginated, forty-nine pages. About 285 black-and-white, tipped-in photographs. There are additional photographic cut-outs that once belonged to an entire photo. For example, many of these cut-outs are portraits of individuals who were once part of a larger photographic composition. Pages are clean and intact overall but all have slight fading and rippling and a few have some dampstaining and small spots or marks. Covers are intact but there is fading on front and back, fraying at the edges, and some staining and soiling on front. Photos are very clean and intact except for light age toning and the occasional wrinkle and a few that have some dampstaining. A Very Good copy. An original photo album kept by the Gray family of Brawley, California. Contains a compendium of scenes from early Brawley, a now-incorporated city located in Imperial County. Brawley was not incorporated until 1908 and was, for a time, a tent city with only about 100 residents. The photos show many oceanside scenes and portraits of, presumably, the Gray family and their friends and acquaintances. Some of the photos appear to show a group of friends who may be high school or college students in their teens or early twenties. Some of these younger individuals pose in front of a "Brawley High School" sign. The photos also show people standing on the beach and people swimming. A few photos show scenic views of natural landscapes. The last photo in back shows a grocery store. Also included is an original Brawley Drug Store envelope dated May 8, 1925 which is likely where at least some of these photos were processed.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Very Good.
