THE FUTURE MRS. COLONEL THOMAS PARKER : 1860 - 1865 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL OF AN OBSERVANT AND DEDICATED CAMDEN NEW JERSEY WOMAN AND DIARIST

On offer is an original, fascinating handwritten diary covering the entire Civil War era from November 29, 1860 through August 20, 1865 by an unnamed woman living near Camden, New Jersey, who after the war, married Thomas P. Parker, Regimental Quartermaster of the 67th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Local historians and researchers will find a treasure trove in this 275 or so pages, thick 7 1/2" x 6 1/4" book which is almost entirely filled with entries from the mundane such as weather reports to entries covering the news of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, "appropriate remarks" by Rev. Mr. Shields at church, war driven excitement in the South, Colonel Anderson's parade to improve morale, the taking Of Richmond (April 1865), Lincoln's funeral, her marriage to Tom Parker, baby's baptism and all manner of local news. In a fine hand this woman is educated and observant and to add some further depth she has cut news clippings of importance to her family or friends. She lived with her aunt, and gave piano lessons in her home and also was a school teacher. She lived near Camden, New Jersey and writes about normal daily affairs, such as stopping at the dentist and having four teeth extracted, then later paying $18 to have teeth put in, attending church regularly, shopping trips and what she buys, being introduced to gentlemen and corresponding with letters, and attending lectures called "the panorama of the rebellion", "Russian War", "Waugh's Galia". She also writes about seeing the national guards perform, raising the flag for the "home guard", weighing herself with a friend at the mill [she weighs 108 lbs.], walking to "Penningtonville", attending "camp meeting", a union meeting, and a "colored camp meeting", went to see a sword to be presented to Col. Anderson, going to see an encampment, attending a meeting to improve the morale of the soldiers, of how "Tom Parker gallanted" her and courted her, then told her of his "intentions" (Nov., 1861), she receives letters from Tom regularly and visits him in Annapolis, receives Tom's letter from Harper's Ferry, meeting Captain Helmbold, of getting her and Tom's photographs taken. She names people and places. An original calling card for "Thomas P. Parker" with his regiment is glued inside the front cover. The diary is nearly filled and at the end, has some entries for 1870 to 1877. Hard marbled-board covers with lined paper are in very good condition with edge and spine wear. Overall G..
