Original publisher's brown wrapper with staple binding. Front cover shows an illustration of a despondent man wearing an broad-arrow-patterned prison uniform leaning on the sill of a barred window looking out to the ocean. 5 7/8" x 8 5/8." Sixteen pages, complete. Three black and white plates, complete. One of the plates is a diagram by Stan Osborn that shows what tortures prisoners were subjected to while on board a convict ship. Back cover has an advertisement for a book called A Complete Illustrated History of the Convict Ship "Success" and an Interesting Insight on England's Transportation System. Pages are very clean and intact. Covers (front and back pages) are clean but are loose from the rest and chipped at the edges. This is an original catalog from the 1933 Chicago World's Fair or the Century of Progress Exposition that accompanied a public exhibition of the Australian convict ship SUCCESS. Back of the front cover says the ship was "[o]pen for public inspection, daily, 10 a. m. to 11 p. m." The booklet contains a key to items and artifacts that were on display. It also gives a brief history of the SUCCESS, the horrendous conditions prisoners were subjected to while aboard, and concise biographies of some of the prisoners. Excerpt from pamphlet: "Aboard her are now shown, in their Original State, all the Airless Dungeons and Condemned Cells, the Whipping Posts, the Manacles, the Branding Irons, the Punishment Balls, the Leaden-Tipped Cat-o'-Nine Tails, the Coffin Bath and the Other Fiendish Inventions of Man's Brutality to his Fellow Man.
