This book presents a selection of the best buildings erected in England between the Wars.It can be described as a handy guide to the art of building,as exemplified during the most recent period when building took place in Britain, and is designed to foster an intelligent, critical, public opinion. Both 'modern' and 'traditional' examples are included, since the important thing is that modern buildings shall be worthy of the national tradition. The selection has been made by a Committee of the Architecture Club, founded by Sir John Squire in 1920,with the object of helping laymen and architects to understand each other's point of view. The aim of this book is to present in pictorial form a small but representative selection of what for one reason or another can be judged to be good buildings carried out by British architects during the last quarter of a century, with the exclusion of Minimum-cost housing, which is a subject in itself and too extensive to be compressed. The architecture concerned has been divided into six sections:Public buildings,Social Services,Office buildings and Business premises,Eccliastical, Educational, and Domestic.
