Letter handwritten in ink on 5" x 8" beige paper. Library of Congress stationery. Datelined January 20, 1871 in Washington, D.C. One page. Letter is clean and intact. Signed "A. R. Spofford." Ainsworth Rand Spofford (1825-1908) was an American journalist, publisher, and the sixth Librarian of Congress. He was appointed as Librarian of Congress by President Abraham Lincoln and served from 1864-1897. Spofford is credited for overseeing the transition of the Library of Congress from a strictly Congressional resource to a national institution. Spofford also gained support for the Copyright Law of 1870 which required all copyrighted items have two copies. With this influx of new materials, the construction of the Thomas Jefferson Building was approved in 1886 to store the items and was completed in 1897. In this letter, Spofford writes to Eugene Didier (1838-1913), an American writer and editor, about Lord Baltimore's Coelestes et Infri.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good.
