Original hand-drawn comic strip art by Al Smith for the comic strip, Mutt and Jeff. Signed by Al Smith in black ink on the fourth panel. Original black ink on white paper with white pigment for original corrections and editing and screentone sheets for texture and shading. Original stickers on two of the panels have the following text: "Copyright 1974, Aedita S. de Beaumont, All World Rights Reserved" and "Trade Mark Registered, A McNaught Syndicate Feature." January 21, 1974. 17 7/8" x 6." Art is very clean and intact with minimal age wear. This is a four-panel comic strip. Panel One: Mutt is sitting in a chair with Jeff standing beside him. Mutt's son, Cicero, walks into the room and says to Mutt: "Pop, I need an encyclopedia for school!" Mutt asks, "How much does it cost?" Panel Two: Cicero replies, "$14.95." Mutt says, "Well, O.K. If you need an encyclopedia I suppose you need it!" Panel Three: Jeff chimes in, "Boy--parents sure spoil their kids these days!" Panel Four: Mutt and Cicero look at Jeff as he walks out of the room and begrudgingly says, "When I was a kid I had to walk to school!" Al Smith (1902-1986) was an American cartoonist who is best-known for his long run on the Mutt and Jeff comic strip, which was created by Bud Fisher. From 1932-1980, Al Smith drew the Mutt and Jeff strip and sometimes wrote for it too. According to comics historian R. C. Harvey, Smith's nearly fifty-year run with this comic strip may be the longest in history to date.. Comic. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: No Binding
