Signature on beige card by Benjamin Shillaber in black ink. Card is adhered to beige lined paper. Datelined March 14, 1879 in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Card measures 4 7/8" x 3 1/8"; paper measures 7 1/2" x 10 1/2." Card reads: "B. P. Shillaber. 'Mrs. Partington.' Chelsea, Mass. March 14, 1879." Card, paper, and signature are very clean and intact. Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber (1814-1890) was a humorist, editor, and printer. Shillaber was born in New Hampshire and began his career in a printing office. He moved to Boston in the 1830s where he became editor of the Boston Daily Post and Saturday Evening Gazette. In 1851, Shillaber was the founding editor of The Carpet-Bag, alongside his business partner, Charles G. Halpine (1829-1868), which was one of the first comic publications in the U.S. In the Daily Post, he introduced his fictional, humorous character of Mrs. Partington. Shillaber commonly wrote under Mrs. Partington's name.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: No Binding
