Arcadia Publishers, Charleston, South Carolina, 2000

ISBN 9780738500317

2000-2004. First Edition, paperback formats. SET OF TWO BOOKS: The Grand Canyon: Native People and Early Visitors (2000), 160 pages; and Visiting the Grand Canyon: Views of Early Tourism (2004), 128 pages, both published by Arcadia. Both in Fine, New condition. Free of stickers, bookplates, writing in text, and page tears. Free of smelly damp stains and the smell of smoke from a smoker. Not library books. Books in gift-giving condition. The two books offer vintage images of the human drama of survival and coexistence in the canyon, from the native tribes who struggled with life on the rim, to the pioneers who came to foster and manipulate the early tourist industry. Between the 1890s and the 1920s, horses, mules, river rafts, stagecoaches, and later railroads and automobiles permitted increasing access to the area. Here is a wonderful selection of photographs that helps present the development of the Arizona landmark from the Forest Reserve in 1893 to full national status in 1919. Here too are photos of popular tourist spots like the El Tovar Hotel and the Navajo Bridge, as well as early conservationist faces of U.S. Presidents. Historical, collectible. Two books to enjoy.
