SHAW, William : The Story of My Mission in South-Eastern Africa: Comprising Some Account of the European Colonists; with Extended Notices of the Kaffir and Other Native Tribes

London: Hamilton Adams and Co, 1860

First Edition. A very good copy in the original green blidstamped cloth, no lettering to spine, neatly recased early 20th centuery retaining the original inside yellow glazed endpapers. A fine inscribed presentation/association copy: "The revd. Mr. Arend Hofmeyr to keep him in remebrance of his yoke-fellow. F. Lion Cachet. Utrecht S A Republic 1868". Frans Lion Cachet (1835 - 1899) was a celebrated controversial 19th century South African Church figure. In 1868 he was involved with Arend Hermanus Hofmeyr (1837 - 1903) in a celebrated incident at Marico, in which they were attacked and removed from the church by a rival religious faction. They co-authored an account of this event, published in 1868. The inscription probably marks this collaboration.
