Original notes handwritten in black ink on light beige paper by George Shaw. No date, circa 1770s-1813. 4" x 7 1/4." Two pages (one leaf with writing on front and back). Original scientific notes handwritten by George Kearsley Shaw (1751-1813), an English naturalist, botanist, and zoologist. His notes are on John Ellis's An Essay Towards the Natural History of the Corallines (1755). The notes are numbered and appear to be mostly, if not entirely, transcriptions of scientific names. Shaw co-founded the Linnean Society in 1788 and became a member of the Royal Society in 1789. Among Shaw's other scientific contributions and achievements were publishing one of the first English-language descriptions (with scientific names) of Australian animals, being one of the first scientists to examine a platypus, and publishing the first scientific description of a platypus (in The Naturalist's Miscellany (1799)). John Ellis (1710-1776) was also a British naturalist and specialized in the study of corals. He became a member of the Royal Society in 1754. Ellis published a number of other scientific essays and was also the first to publish a description of the Venus flytrap with its botanical name. Ellis was also known as Jean Ellis or J. Ellis..
