"Shalot" : Things for the Cook - Part 1, English

Thacker, Spink & Co., Calcutta, 1906

127 pages (complete). A gloriously imperial book of recipes for the Indian cook and House-mistress. The book was compiled and published because "Not one Englishwoman in a hundred can, even in her own tongue, give an intelligible explanation of a receipt, much less in a language that Nabi Bukhsh could understand. The results are sometimes appalling. The Riot Act has to be read, and Nabi Bukhsh and his following are scattered. Each party thinks the other entirely to blame. An affray of this kind reminds us of a collision in a doorway between a housemaid and a cross-eyed butler." Eccentrically eloquent, vastly catered for, compiled in Victorian scale. The boards have scuffing, wear, marks from handling and storage. The spine is healthy if a little marked and worn head and foot. The contents are most agreeable and domestic. The early pages have some handling marks. Otherwise, the pages are clean, clear, very generous, most genial, most convivial, utterly competent. fk. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover.
