Eight volumes. Contemporary sprinkled calf. Spine gilt in panels between raised bands. Two maroon labels on each spine, marbled endpapers. Some wear on edges and corners. Spine ends chipped, rubbed on bands and some labels missing. Joints cracked to some volumes but boards firmly attached. Contents generally clean and tight. Old signatures on endpapers and the armorial bookplate of Richard Needham pasted over an earlier example. Volume I contains Johnson's important Preface and Nicholas Rowe's Life of Shakespeare which was the first attempt at a biography. Johnson also reprints Pope's, Theobald's, Hanmer's and Warburton's Prefaces together with their notes in the text making this a useful variorum edition.
