"One of the greatest pieces of devotional music ever composed, Schubert's Ave Maria has been inspiring singers, orchestras and music lovers for more than a hu ndred years. When it was selected as a concluding number in the first Walt Disney Concert Feature, Fantasia, it offered an exciting challenge to the finest creative minds of the Disney organization. H undreds of paintings and sketches were prepared in an endeavor to explore various ways of visualizing that glorious music-of translating its spirit and meaning from sound to sight. Of course, only par t of this exploration could be used in the final production. Some of the unused pictures as well as those inthe film are so lovely as to deserve a permanence this volumn hopes to give them. Disney's Fa ntasia introduces new lyrics written by Rachael Field for Schubert's music-lyrics which through the medium of wordss interpret the spirit of both music and the pictures. Schubert wrote the music in 182 5 to verses in 'The Lady Of The Lake' by Sir Walter Scott. It was later discovered that the words of the Latin prayer, Ave Maria, could also be sung to this music and many people believe that the pray eer served as Schubert's original inspiration. At the time Disney artists were working on Fantasia, Miss Field visited the studio and saw the pictures that had been ceated to interpret Ave Maria. She was so deeply impressed by their mystical quality that she wrote the moving and beautiful verses presented here for the first time". Almost every page has Disney color or black and white illustrations . The music and lyrics are in gold and follow the pages as you turn as does the poem in black and gold lettering.
