In a very rubbed and worn contemporary binding of calf over scabbard that lacks about half of the backstrip, both free endpapers, and has a small oval label affixed to rear pastedown. The Second Spira was first published at London in 1693 by John Dunton, who received the manuscript from Richard Sault, a mathematician by training but who worked as editor of and contributor to Dunton's weekly publication the 'Athenian Gazette.' Although Sault claimed to know the apostatized atheist, and despite the testimonials of many witnesses to its authenticity, Dunton later came to the conclusion that Sault was the book's only author and to regret ever having published it.
