Fleet & T. Crump, for Benjamin Eliot, on the North side of King-Street., 1715. This is an imperfect copy lacking 10 leaves. Small 12mo.: A6(-2),B6,C6(-3.4),D6,E6(-3.4),F6(-2.5,3.4,6). 12.5 cm. Pp.[1-2],[5-11],[1]-17,22-38[i.e., 39. There is an error in pagination: Page number 37 is used twice.],1-2,7- 12 pp. Besides the missing leaves, several of the remaining leaves are damaged and stained, with some occasional loss of text. In a very rubbed and worn contemporary binding of calf over scabbard that lacks about half of the backstrip, both free endpapers, and has a small oval label affixed to rear pastedown. Offered with all faults. The Second Spira was first published at London in 1693 by John Dunton, who received the manuscript from Richard Sault, a mathematician by training but who worked as editor of and contributor to Dunton's weekly publication the 'Athenian Gazette.' Although Sault claimed to know the apostatized atheist, and despite the testimonials of many witnesses to its authenticity, Dunton later came to the conclusion that Sault was the book's only author and to regret ever having published it. However, like the biography of the first Spira (an Italian advocate and atheist) that was initially published in 1548 and many times thereafter in Italian and French, The Second Spira proved to be just as popular: Thirty thousand copies sold within the first six weeks of publication and it went through many editions, including this colonial edition by the Boston bookseller and publisher Benjamin Eliot, an official government publisher for the Massachusetts Bay Colony and the the publisher of Cott
