On offer is a fascinating archive of original handwritten letters and ephemera from Sarah Howe in Nantes France, who married the vice-consul in Nantes, Antoine Martial [Antoine Martial St-Cyr Louis Azais]. These are mostly by Sarah to her brothers and sisters, but some are by her husband discussing a wide range of topics: politics, living in Paris, her husband, slavery, food prices, adultery etc., etc. There are a few pieces of ephemera; a school essay, a legal document or two and the letters make for approximately 73 pages and date from the early to mid 1840's and are on, for the most part, folio, 8 ¾ x 13 ¼ inch paper.
