Polycrates was the tyrant of Samos. According to Herodotus, Polycrates death was wanted either because he was unable to add Samos to Persia's territory, or because Polycrates had supposedly not given the necessary attention to a Persian ambassador. This image depicts the Crucifixion of Polycrates. Planned by the Governor of Sardis, Polycrates was invited to Sardis and killed by crucifixion, an undignified death for a tyrant.
