Samuel Rowe,b. 11/11/1793 - d. 15/9/1853, was curate, vicar and miniister of four churches in Plymouth,Devon and vicar of Crediton,a historian and antiquarian, first published 'A Perambulation of Dartmoor' in 1848,as a result of fieldwork carried out in 1827-8.All the known ancient monuments on Dartmoor are described and listed, and many picturesquely illustrated. The original work was considerably revised and enlarged in 1896,with the inclusion of much new material, along with woodcuts, paintings by Frederick John Widgery, and fold-out maps.It is this edition which is here reproduced in facsimile. 'A Perambulation of Dartmoor' stands alongside the works of Worth and Crossing as one of the three classic books on Dartmoor. Those many people who love the moor, and wish to know more of its history, will welcome the opportunity to include this scarce volume on their bookshelves. Frederick John Widgery (b.May,1861 - d. 27th January,1942 aged 81.) was a West Country artist. The younger son of William Widgery (1826-1893 - himself a self-taught artist).Educated at Exeter Cathedral School and then at the Exeter School of Art, followed by the South Kensington Museum School of Art,before travelling to Antwerp. Widgery was a popular and active leader of the Exeter Civic Community from 1890,which was the year he settled back in Exeter, after having travelled to Antwerp to study art under Charles Verlat at the National Art School and with Hubert von Herkomer in Bushey. He became the city's Mayor in 1903 and was subsequently made a Freeman,an Alderman and was elected Chair of the City's Town Planning Committee.Widgery's civic deeds were complimented with his work as an artist and the two combine as evidence for the passion and engagement he felt for Exeter and the surrounding West Country. Widgery was a talented painter of the landscape, moors, coast and sea and skilful at capturing the particular local light and weather. As a 'plein air' painter,Widgery often worked in watercolour and some of his most accomplished works show a close understanding of nature in well-observed moorland fauna and passing showers.
