On offer is an absolutely sensational pair [2] of manuscript dairies dated 1977 - 1983 handwritten by a man who only identifies himself as 'R' [the last entry of the first book is in another hand and address the entry to Robert] who within the two books paints an intriguing portrait of a man of many demons and otherwise represents much of the gender issues of the day. In the earlier book he writes he is in Akron, works in a restaurant, writes at about college level, declaring his love for Pam who understands him like no other, then early on making references to concerns about his sexual identity, his addiction to codeine, that he drinks a fifth of wine before bed, wakes up takes a hit of something then some time later says he is still speeding. Soon he joyously announces: 'I love the night. Tonight I'm going to speed all night'. Within a few months he is questioning his relationship with Pam and details his further descent into alcohol and drugs. There are many passages dealing with sex with other women, his and their perversions all the while interspersed by his homosexual feelings. He mentions names, sex acts etc. making for a very explicit diary. By the second book, beginning in 1982 he mentions his wife Deborah, his beloved daughter then he writes a raunchy, graphic love ode to young men he would like to sleep with, he writes wants to bail out on his boring life but between feeling the familial pull of duty and bluster of walking away and hitchhiking somewhere, anywhere, he has no resources. He rails at the violence and politics of the day, he drives cab works a long day for $20. He still lives in Ohio, he thinks in some ways he is a writer and some passages seem stream of consciousness or more likely he is drunk or stoned doing words riffs. In 1983 he attends to his grandfather's funeral, mentions his new girlfriend of 4 months not with him but well missed. Adding depth is a polaroid photo of we assume the writer, naked in all his glory. Book 1, 7½ x 5¼ inches, dated 1977 - 1982 has approximately 68 pages of entries. Overall VG.
