ROBERT J. RUBY : 1950 SUPERB ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL OF HAND WRITTEN NOTES AND HAND DRAWN CHARTS, GRAPHS AND TECHNICAL ILLUSTRATIONS CREATED BY A GIFTED STUDENT OF MINING IN MICHIGAN

8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. On offer is a superb collection of 3 notebooks of a student at one of America's top engineering and technology universities. The collection contains 3 hardbound notebooks, each measuring 5 inches by 7 inches and containing approximately 90 pages. They are respectively about 90%, 50% and 30$ complete. The notebooks contain meticulously written notes and clear, detailed drawings. The embossed covers are in good condition as are all of the pages within. There are some additional note pages, maps and drawings inserted into the books. Robert J. Ruby was a student attending Michigan College of Mining and Technology in 1950. Casual research has not turned up any additional biographical information. Michigan College of Mining and Technology (MCMT) was established in 1885 to educate and train mining engineers for the copper mines in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is rich in copper and iron and was home to significant mining industry. MCMT changed its name around 1964 to Michigan Technological University. Of Ruby's 3 notebooks, one volume, entitled "Mining Methods," contains illustrated sections that address Stopping Methods, Sub-Level Storing, Room & Pillar, Block Caving, Top-Slicing, and Sub-Level Caving. It also contains illustrated field notes for about 25 different Michigan mines, plants, mineral ranges, etc. A second volume, titled "Field Notes," contains illustrated sections with detailed information covering 25 Minnesota mines, docks, ranges, etc. The third untitled volume primarily contains data tables and computations. It is indexed and contains 24 sections, section titles include: Hand Leveling, Angle Construction, Building Layout, Hurontown Traverse, Stadia Traverse, Polaris, Triangulation Quadrilateral, etc. Ruby's drawings and illustrations are superb and his text is detailed, but concise. These are an absolutely excellent illustration of the nature and quality of the mining engineering education offered in the years immediately following WWII.
